Motivating People from Within

Inspirational leadership is about motivating people from within. That means that you are able to get them to motivate themselves. Leaders do this in a variety of ways including:

1. Encouraging people to use their talents and abilities.
2. Asking for employee's feedback.
3. Letting employees work independently.
4. Allowing people to arrive at their own solutions.
5. Trusting people to succeed instead of fail.

How many of these leadership skills do you practice every day? If you do, you've experienced the benefits of employees who believe in themselves and their abilities.

Nice Leadership Is Not Weak

A lot of leaders forget that being nice isn't the same as being weak. You can be nice, treat people kindly and be an excellent leader. The myth we often function under is that leadership is about dominating people and giving orders in a strict way. Picture the things that help that type of leader get things done and add kindness and compassion to their skills. Practicing nice leadership is about learning how to lead effectively while behaving in a way that treats people well.

Leadership and Dealing with Emotions

A leadership training article I wrote on the value of leaders dealing with emotions in the workplace.

My Way or the Highway

There are many leaders who genuinely believe there is only one way to do things in the workplace. When anyone offers a suggestion or alternative they become offended, territorial or more domineering. The difficulty with this leadership style is that it closes the door to new ideas or outside participation. It gives you exactly one way to do things.

The question to be answered is what happens when that one strategy doesn't work any longer? Often the autocratic leader has no other options and won't listen to others to find alternatives. The key to inspiring leadership is to have the courage of your convictions and add the additional resources that come from the outside. It means being open to ideas and input and adding them to your toolbox.
